DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK

The second week of September marks Truck Driver Appreciation Week, and this year, we want to express our gratitude to the hardworking drivers at Siskin.

HISTORY OF SISKIN TRUCK DRIVERS

In 1900, R.H. Siskin and his partner, Rubin, launched a scrap metal business in Chattanooga with only $6 in their pocket. Ten years later, Siskin bought out Rubin and changed the name to R.H. Siskin and Sons. After a period of expansion in 1924, Siskin acquired its first flatbed truck to transport scrap metal gathered around the city and other salvageable items. Two years later, in 1926, R.H. Siskin passed away, leaving the scrap business to his sons, Mose and Garrison Siskin.

Despite the Great Depression a few years later, Siskin continued to succeed and built its first office in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The original building is long gone, but the historical site remains. Over the next few decades, Siskin grew exponentially and added more trucks to the fleet. Currently, we have 63 trucks and drivers across all six locations.

DRIVER TIPS – HOW TO STAY HEALTHY ON THE ROAD

Drivers have a unique challenge for staying healthy. Here are three tips to stay fit on the road:

  1. Keep dried fruit on hand for a healthy snack.
  2. Challenge yourself to eat one serving of vegetables at each meal.
  3. Stay hydrated.

SUN SAFETY FOR DRIVERS

  1. Wear sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of at least 15.
  2. Ensure that your sunscreen provides both UVA and UVB protection.
  3. Reapply sunscreen every two hours.

Your eye health plays a significant role in your well-being. Prolonged exposure to UV light can cause periocular cancer (cancer of the eyelid) and other health issues. To prevent this damage, you can wear sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.
